New Home Office figures show there were 5,000 reports of rental fraud last year, alongside losses of £9 million.
Renters aged 18 to 29 accounted for 48% of all reported cases.
One common scam is where fraudsters advertise properties on social media that do not actually exist or are not theirs to let out.
Warning signs ⚠️
Rental fraudsters target tenants who are on a tight budget and in a hurry.
They usually advertise properties at rents far below market levels, and demand money in advance just to arrange a viewing.
Stay safe
The Home Office advises renters not to rush into a decision or pay any money before they’ve viewed a property.
The best way to find genuine rental properties is to use a reputable local letting agent.
